Why Group Therapy?

Group therapy offers something individual therapy cannot:

  • Real-time relational feedback

  • Reduced isolation

  • Community and shared experience

  • Skill-building in live interaction

  • Deeper insight into relationship patterns

Research consistently shows that group therapy is highly effective for depression, anxiety, relational concerns, identity development, and life transitions.

For many people, group therapy becomes one of the most transformative parts of their mental health journey.

how therapy works team

Not all Groups are the Same.

At Grounded Therapy:

  • Groups are led by licensed doctoral psychologists

  • Sessions are structured and clinically guided

  • Insurance is accepted

  • All sessions are HIPAA-secure and virtual

We are not peer-led support circles nor coaching groups. We provide evidence-based psychological care in a group setting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where a licensed psychologist works with a small group of participants to explore shared concerns, build insight, and improve relationships. Unlike peer-led support groups, therapist-led groups are structured, clinically guided, and grounded in evidence-based practice.

Is group therapy as effective as individual therapy?

Yes. Research shows that group therapy is highly effective for concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, identity development, and life transitions. Many people find group therapy uniquely powerful because they receive feedback from multiple perspectives and reduce feelings of isolation.

How many people are in each group?

Most of our therapy groups are intentionally small, typically 6–8 participants. When appropriate, no more than 15. This allows for meaningful connection while ensuring each member has space to participate.

Is group therapy confidential?

Yes. All participants agree to maintain confidentiality. Sessions are conducted through HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms to ensure privacy and security.

Do you accept insurance for group therapy?

Yes. We accept major insurance plans for most groups. Many participants only pay their copay or coinsurance amount. We verify your benefits before your first session so there are no surprises.

What if I don’t have insurance?

We offer a cash pay option for most groups. The Queer Men’s Therapy Group, for example, is $60 per session without insurance.

How do I know if group therapy is right for me?

Group therapy may be a strong fit if you:

  • Feel isolated or disconnected

  • Want to improve relationships

  • Struggle with anxiety or depression

  • Are open to giving and receiving feedback

  • Want a more interactive therapy experience

If you’re unsure, we can schedule a brief consultation to determine fit.

Can I be in individual therapy at the same time?

Yes. Many participants combine group therapy with individual therapy. The two formats often complement each other.

What happens during a typical session?

Sessions are facilitated by a licensed psychologist. Participants discuss current experiences, relational patterns, emotional reactions, and personal goals. The therapist actively guides discussion, ensures psychological safety, and helps members deepen insight.

What if I’m nervous about speaking in a group?

That’s completely normal. Many people feel hesitant at first. You are not required to share more than you feel ready to. Over time, most participants find the group becomes one of the safest spaces they have.

Can I join after the group has started?

Some groups allow rolling admission depending on structure and clinical fit. Others begin as closed groups. We can clarify availability when you inquire.

Are your groups virtual or in person?

All groups are currently virtual and available to residents of California, as well as other states, dependant on your Psychologist’s licensure. Sessions are conducted via secure telehealth platforms.
